SERENA

Serena held the badge in her hands, staring at it in disbelief. The words Knightseeker ran along the underside. There was a faint blue glow of a crest in the middle, apparently depicting its legitimacy. The crest was a knight on a hill, staring out into the distance.

"Thought you were a myth," Serena said.

"You think King's Knights are a myth," Michael retorted, dragging out a bunch of books from the safe under Patrick's desk.

"Never met one."

"Do you think the current king is a myth? You've never met him."

"Seen him on television, not the same."

"You're an elf! Your kind lives long enough to have met the King's Knights!"

"Dark elf, actually. My kind hardly canoodled with humans throughout history. We had our own thing going on."

"Canoodled?" Michael repeated. "Anyway, some of these grimores are completely unique. There might be something in here."

"Fine, let's split the pile and get studying."

Michael cocked his head at her.

"What?" she asked, feeling on the spot.

"Thanks for helping me," he said. "I appreciate it, especially when it has nothing to do with you. You could've just gone home and it would've been understandable."

"You help your friends," Serena said.

"Friends. Really?"

"Okay, fine, my oobi woobi boyfwend!" Serena was taking the piss, but she still blossomed with nerves at the words. She felt her cheeks go hot and turned away from him so he wouldn't see her blushing.

"Friends is fine for now, then," Michael said, chuckling.

Serena handed the badge back. "Does this mean I'm your squire?" she touched her lip. "Oh sire, no, don't gaze upon me with such hunger, tis quite inappropriate! I am but your student, innocent in the ways of adventure and love."

Michael ignored her, sitting at one of the chairs by the table at the other end of the room. He began pouring over the books, leaving Serena standing there staring at him.

"I best get to work then," she said.
